Please Stop Should-ing on your Social Media
The past few days I have seen a graphic shared on social media quite a few times saying “How often to post in 2023” the graphic says 2-3 reels per week, 1-2 single images per week, 2-3 carousels per week 3-7 Stories per day, and 2 IG Lives per month.
I'm anxious and exhausted just from reading that much less attempting to keep up with it. Now some people might say it's easy you just do xy&z and it's no big deal.
But let's be real.
As a business owner, you are doing the thing that you actually started your business to do, it's that thing you love that you knew no corporate entity or other person did quite like you do, so you started a business to share it with the world.
I'm going to guess that you may have been a bit naive like I was when you started a business having no idea ALL of the things you would have to learn as a business owner.
Now not only are you incredibly good at what you do, but you are also the marketing person, the salesperson, the customer service person, the scheduler, the accountant, the IT person…the list goes on and on depending on how the day goes you know the drill, and as a mindful entrepreneur you're probably trying to have some sort of work-life balance, where you can have and enjoy your free time too.
PLUS one of the reasons you created this business is probably one of the most common reasons I tend to hear from people and that is to have FREEDOM!
Tell me where the freedom comes from when you're continuously watching YouTube videos on all the things that go with running a business (which takes up so much of your time) trying your hardest to become a jack of all trades to avoid hiring out and cutting into the slim profit margins you're seeing while attempting to remain in a place of love and passion for the thing that you started your business to share.
Now you have some “expert” on social media and a post with 5,000 likes is telling you that the secret to your business's success is focusing all of your energy on making posts on social media every day, sometimes twice a day, and, and and…sure it's easy.
It's easy when you have the money to have a team to help you, it's easy when you don't have family or friends who want to see you, and it's easy when the gift that you are sharing with the world happens to be social media and you already understand it.
For most people, it's just not that easy.
And I'm going to share a little secret with you. Even the people who have a social media team, who have big followings, who create content you LOVE to consume, get tired and burnt out from showing up on social media day after day.
This is why I do social media the way I do. It's so important to find what works for you right now. This is also why I keep coming up with new ways to meet my clients where they are today to support them in their business growth.
Let me tell you another secret, your posts will help people know who you are and what you do, but they, most likely, will not be the thing that truly moves the needle in your business. On social media, it's a combination of showing up and sharing content your dream clients are looking for while also focusing on the most important aspect of social media, the SOCIAL part.
Having conversations, making new connections with accounts that light you up, and getting in the DM's with no agenda that's going to be what truly moves the needle.
I can't argue a posting strategy as aggressive as the one I outlined at the start of this email will bring you more views, further reach, and maybe even more followers but without the social aspect it's just another vanity metric.
Since 2023 hit, I have created more strategies with every other day posting schedules and am seeing great success with it. It allows the business owner to worry less about the content and have time for the connections.
So let's stop should-ing on ourselves, and find a way to show up that feels good. This is why I want all entrepreneurs to know that social media can be an act of self-care. The more we lean into it in a mindful, aligned way the more that light you shine will be seen when you show up to it from a place that feels good.
If you're looking for a little connection and inspiration I would love to invite you to my free event, Socially Inspired on Thursday, March 23rd at 3:00 Eastern. I will share the most important updates on social media that will help you stay informed. I will share some inspiration with you to help you create social media posts that speak from your heart directly to your dream clients, and then we will connect as a group of mindful entrepreneurs navigating the business world together.
